As Toronto’s reputation as a prosperous, globally-relevant metropolis grows, the city’s lurking poverty and growing socio-economic divisions are too often ignored. The Local (www.thelocal.to) is an urban health magazine that tells smart, in-depth stories that bring out the unique characteristics of different parts of Toronto, gives voice to those who are marginalized and unheard, and ignites conversations about how Toronto can be a world-class city for all. In this talk, editor-in-chief Tai Huynh will draw from The Local’s body of writing to bring into sharp focus the forces that are ailing Torontonians in different neighbourhoods, and what people are doing about it.
