Smart cities like Sidewalk Toronto put add a layer between people, government and decisions about the future of our cities. Citizens and groups have expressed their concerns about the implications for privacy, democracy and transparency when big corporations take the lead in creating a community from planning to development.

How can citizens hold corporations and governments to a high standard in unprecedented types of development?

Nabeel is a researcher and consultant on smart cities and social enterprise, and is currently on the steering committee of the Toronto Open Smart Cities Forum. He previously worked in the nonprofit, social enterprise and international development sectors and has degrees in urban planning, public administration, and business administration.
